Flickr app Export to Wikimedia Commons

The official Flickr app doesn't have a built-in "Export to Wikimedia Commons" button, you can use your iPhone to move photos between the two. This "bridge" is a way to ensure photos with open licenses reach a wider audience.

​There are three primary ways to do this from your iPhone:

​1. Flickypedia (Recommended for Mobile)

​This is a newer, mobile-friendly tool created through a partnership between the Flickr Foundation and Wikimedia. It is designed to be "the bridge" you were likely told about.  

​How it works: Open Safari on your iPhone and go to flickypedia.org.

​The Process: You simply paste the URL of a Flickr photo (which you can copy from the Flickr app’s "Share" menu). Flickypedia checks if the license is compatible (e.g., CC BY or CC BY-SA) and guides you through adding titles and categories before sending it straight to Commons.  

​2. The Official Wikimedia Commons App

​While there is an official "Wikimedia Commons" app on the iOS App Store, it is primarily designed for uploading photos directly from your iPhone’s camera roll.

​The Workflow: If you have the original photo on your phone, it’s easier to upload it directly via this app.

​Note: If the photo is only on Flickr, you would have to download it to your "Photos" app first, then use the Commons app to upload it.

​3. Flickr2Commons (The Power User Tool)

​This is a web-based tool by Magnus Manske that many long-time Wikipedians use.  

​Best for: Uploading entire albums or multiple photos at once.

​The Process: You log in with your Wikimedia account via your mobile browser and provide the Flickr user ID or album link. It will "scrape" the images and allow you to batch-upload them.  

​Critical Reminder: Licensing

​Regardless of the tool, Wikimedia Commons only accepts photos with specific Free Licenses. When browsing Flickr on your iPhone, look for these labels under the "License" section:  

​Public Domain or CC0

​Attribution (CC BY)

​Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA)  

​[!IMPORTANT]

If a photo says "All Rights Reserved," "Non-Commercial," or "No Derivatives," it cannot be uploaded to Commons, even with these tools.
