Setting up a Wikimedia Commons account

Setting up a Wikimedia Commons account on a mobile device is straightforward and gives you access to all Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia.

Method 1: Using the Mobile Web Browser (Recommended)

Since a Wikimedia account is "unified," creating one on the website is the most reliable way to ensure it works across all platforms.

Open your mobile browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.) and go to commons.wikimedia.org.

Tap the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left or top-right corner.

Tap Log in / create account.

Select Create account.

Fill in the required fields:

Username: Choose a unique name (this will be public).

Password: Create a secure password.

Email address: This is optional but highly recommended so you can recover your account or receive notifications.

Complete the CAPTCHA security check and tap Create your account.

Method 2: Using the Mobile App

There are specific apps for Android and iOS, though their features differ slightly.

For Android Users:

Download the Wikimedia Commons app from the Google Play Store.

When you open the app, you will see a login screen.

Tap the link that says "Don't have an account? Create one" (or similar) to be guided through the registration process directly within the app.

For iOS Users:

The official "Wikimedia Commons" app on iOS is less frequently updated than the Android version.

It is often easier to create your account via the Wikipedia app or the mobile browser first. Once created, you can simply log into the Commons app with those same credentials.

Important Tips for New Users

Unified Login: Your new account works for Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, and all other Wikimedia sites. You don't need to make separate accounts for each.

Public Identity: Your username will be attached to every photo or edit you make. If you prefer privacy, avoid using your real name.

Email Verification: If you provided an email, check your inbox for a confirmation link to fully activate all features (like being able to email other users or reset your password).
