Community Leadership and Public Service:
 The Life of Waldaba H. Stewart Jr.

1. Lesson Overview

In this WikiExplorers lesson, Ms. Rivers introduces students to the life of Dr. Waldaba Stewart, a teacher, community organizer, and New York State senator who worked to improve health care and education in Brooklyn.

Students will learn how one person can help strengthen neighborhoods through public service, education, and community development.

This lesson connects local history with civic responsibility and encourages students to think about how they can contribute to their own communities.

3. Story Introduction

Ms. Rivers and the WikiExplorers

Ms. Rivers gathered the WikiExplorers in the community library in Brooklyn.

“Today,” she said, writing a name on the board,
“we are learning about a man who believed that knowledge and community care could change the world.”

She wrote:

Dr. Waldaba Stewart

One of the students raised his hand.

“Was he a teacher?”

“Yes,” Ms. Rivers smiled. “He began as a teacher in New York City schools. But he also believed that education should help communities become stronger.”

Another student asked, “What did he do for Brooklyn?”

Ms. Rivers explained that Dr. Stewart helped create community health programs and worked to improve hospitals such as Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn so families could receive better medical care.

“He also served in government,” she continued.

She pointed to another note on the board:

New York State Senate

“That means he helped write laws that could improve people's lives.”

The students looked impressed.

“So he was like a bridge,” said one student.
“Between the community and the government.”

Ms. Rivers nodded.

“Exactly.”

4. Key Historical Connections

Dr. Stewart worked during a time when many communities were organizing for civil rights, political representation, and better social services.

He also participated in national political discussions including the historic National Black Political Convention, where leaders gathered to discuss the future of Black political power in America.

Ms. Rivers explained:

“Moments like this helped communities across the country speak with a stronger voice.”

5. Community Impact

Dr. Stewart helped create organizations that supported health care and development in Brooklyn neighborhoods such as:

Bedford-Stuyvesant
Crown Heights
Fort Greene

These organizations helped families gain access to medical services and community programs.

Later in his life, he also taught students at Medgar Evers College, inspiring new generations of leaders.

Students create a “Community Impact Map.”

Steps:

Research one community leader who helped improve your neighborhood.

Identify the problems they tried to solve.

Map the places they worked (schools, hospitals, community centers).

Share the story with the class.

Ms. Rivers tells the students:

“Every neighborhood has people who work quietly to improve life for others. 

WikiExplorers help bring those stories into the light.”

“Dr. Stewart believed that knowledge should serve people.

When we learn, research, and share knowledge responsibly—like good Wikipedians—we also become community builders.”
